Do the balloons fly over the pyramids?

The photos show balloons right above the Pyramid of the Sun. Some mornings that is exactly what happens; on others you see the pyramids from a distance. Here is why, and how to set your expectations.

This is the most common complaint in otherwise glowing reviews: "the balloon doesn't actually fly over the pyramids like the pictures show". Others, on the same listings, write that they "went directly over the pyramids".

Both are true, and the reason is simple: a hot air balloon goes where the wind goes.

The quick answer

Sometimes, but nobody can promise it. Pilots control height, not direction, so the morning's wind sets the route. On many flights you pass close to the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon; on others you see them a few kilometres away. Operators such as Volare state in their listing that you may not fly over the archaeological site.

Can a hot air balloon be steered?

Not sideways: the pilot can only climb or descend, using winds that blow in slightly different directions at different heights.

Skilled pilots use those layers to nudge the balloon towards the pyramids, but they cannot override the general wind. One operator's reply to a reviewer puts it plainly: balloons do not have a steering wheel, their direction depends on the wind, and the pilot sets the altitude for safety.

How close do balloons get to the pyramids?

On a favourable wind, close enough to look down onto the Pyramid of the Sun; on others, a few kilometres off to the side.

Launch fields are spread around San Martín de las Pirámides and nearby villages, so the starting point also matters. Flyers who passed overhead describe it as the highlight of their trip; flyers who stayed further away still see both pyramids, the valley and the volcanoes at sunrise.

What do the reviews say?

They split: many flyers passed right over the pyramids, a minority saw them only at a distance, and most rate the flight highly either way.

The listings here rate 4.8 to 4.9 from thousands of reviews. The lower reviews rarely blame the flight itself; they mention the route, crowded baskets or the breakfast. Setting expectations is the best way to enjoy the morning.

Can you choose an operator that flies closer?

No operator can guarantee it, but launch site and pilot skill play a part, so read recent reviews for the operator you pick.

Look for recent reviews that mention the route, and avoid any seller promising to fly directly over the pyramids every time. That is a promise the wind does not allow.

Where do the balloons land?

In open fields around the valley, wherever the wind brings the balloon down; the chase crew meets you there.

The chase crew follows the balloon by road and drives you back to the base. That is also why landings can be bumpy: hold the handles and follow the pilot's landing position.

Which time of year gives the best views?

The dry season, roughly November to April, gives the clearest skies and the best chance of seeing the volcanoes.

Rainy-season mornings, June to September, are more often cloudy or grounded. See the best time to fly for month-by-month detail.

How do you see the pyramids up close anyway?

Pick a package with real time at the archaeological zone, or a guide.

Packages give you anything from about an hour of free time to a guided visit. The flight, cave and pyramids tour gives about 90 minutes at the site; We Fly offers a certified guide on its all-inclusive option. Climbing rules on the pyramids have changed several times since 2020, so check on the day.

Want time on the ground too? This tour pairs the flight with about 90 minutes at the pyramids.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Teotihuacan balloon worth it if it doesn't fly over the pyramids?

Most flyers say yes: the sunrise over the valley, with dozens of balloons and the pyramids in view, is the experience. Go in expecting a view of the pyramids, not a fly-over.

How high do the balloons fly?

The pilot sets the height for the wind and safety on the day, so it varies flight by flight.

Can I ask the pilot to fly over the pyramids?

You can ask, but the pilot can only use the height layers of the wind; direction is not under their control.
