Breakfast in a cave at Teotihuacan

After landing, most balloon packages head to breakfast inside a natural cave near the pyramids. It is a memorable setting, and a frequent source of confusion about what is included.

The area around San Martín de las Pirámides has several restaurants built inside volcanic caves. Balloon operators partner with them for the breakfast that follows the flight: the itineraries name La Cueva Teotihuacán, La Gruta and the Cueva Obsidiana, among others.

Here is what to expect, and how to make sure your option includes it.

The quick answer

The cave breakfast comes after the flight, around 8 AM, and is included only in the package options, not in most flight-only from-prices. Operators use different caves: La Cueva Teotihuacán, La Gruta, the Cueva Obsidiana or Xibalbá. Expect Mexican breakfast dishes and coffee in a dramatic setting; reviews of the food itself are mixed.

Which balloon tours include breakfast in a cave?

Most package options do; the flight-only options usually do not.

Check the option name at checkout. The cave is part of these packages:

What is served?

Mexican breakfast staples such as chilaquiles, eggs, fruit, sweet bread and coffee; some operators offer a Mexican or American choice.

Volare's breakfast, for instance, offers a Mexican or an American plate. Vegetarian options are possible: one flyer on the most-booked flight mentions that a vegetarian breakfast was arranged. Tell the operator in advance about dietary needs.

Is the cave breakfast worth it?

For the setting, yes; for the food alone, opinions vary.

Many reviewers call the cave a highlight. Others found the food average for the extra price, or the coffee too sweet. If the setting appeals, take the package; if you mainly want a good meal, eat in Mexico City later.

When does breakfast happen?

After the flight, usually around 8 AM, before the visit to the pyramids.

The van takes you from the landing field back to the base, then to the cave. You will have had only coffee and biscuits since about 5:30 AM, so a snack in your bag helps.

Is there a show?

Some caves put on a short pre-Hispanic style performance; it varies by restaurant and day.

One flyer describes the cave as "a cool experience: good food and drinks and a unique show". Do not count on it, but enjoy it if it happens.

Can you visit the caves without a balloon flight?

Yes: the cave restaurants are ordinary restaurants open to the public.

If you are doing the pyramids on a ground tour or on your own, you can stop for a meal. The balloon packages simply bundle it into the morning.

The caves also welcome walk-in diners.

What else is on the post-flight schedule?

Often a stop at an obsidian and agave workshop with a tasting, then the archaeological zone.

The tasting stop ends in a shop; nobody has to buy anything. Pyramid entry is extra on most packages. See the price guide for everything you pay on the day.

One booking, the whole morning: flight, toast, cave breakfast and transport.
